Eighteen TrailBlazers and one canine headed to Fayetteville on a warm and sunny October day to hike on Mt. Kessler with Judith and Ed as our hike leaders.  Upon our arrival at the trailhead, Frank Sharp was there to greet us and tell us about the new innovations.

Frank has been very active in this huge project by donating land and helping acquire more land to create these beautiful trails for everyone to enjoy right in the middle of the city.  Frank also worked to create the neat new gazebo as well as a bridge a short way up the trail.  There is also some new signage and plans are afoot to encourage more young people to learn about nature and hike the trails.

Since we decided to eat our lunch at the end of the hike, several of us decided to ditch our backpacks in the vehicles.  It feels great not to be lugging a pack on a warm day.  Old Steve, as opposed to our new Steve in the club, even volunteered to carry Yours Truly’s water bottle to leave her with only a camera to wrestle with!  As we started hiking steadily upward, we were treated to some fall color on the trail as well at Rock City, a passage on the trail where there are huge boulders on either side – well worth a photo op!

As we hiked up and down and around we trekked along trails with such picturesque names as Western Myth, Spellbound, Eggbeater, and Trent.  Surely there must be a story behind these names!  We were pleased to see some fall foliage on the trail and hopefully there will be more even though this may not be the best year for color due to high temps and little rain.

After about 6 miles we had completed the loop and headed back to the picnic tables to eat lunch and visit.

Please sign up on this site if you plan to hike at Pedestal Rocks next week.
