Twenty two hikers and three canines started out from the Visitor Center at Lake Fort Smith with cool temperatures and a brisk wind.

There was plenty of running water on the Shepherd Springs Loop, which turned out to be a longer hike that we expected, in excess of 5 miles. There were lovely vistas, flowering plants, and the usual historic evidence of habitation of the area in the distant past.

Everyone soldiered on through some rugged places and a wash out on part of the Ozark Highland Trail.  I think it safe to say that we all felt challenged in the end.  The young girls were the only ones seemingly unaffected - actually doing cartwheels at the end of the hike!
